2" x 8" headers are the beams that support the runners and hold the structure together. The headers come with fitted decorative end caps and run the longest of the size dimension (for example, a 12 x 16 Pergola will have 16' long headers
and 12' long runners).

The 2" x 6" runners are the top most part of the pergola and are spaced 10” apart, and are placed perpendicular to the header.
